My Studio is Open – Vernon Mill Remembers

Open Studio Weekend – Vernon Mill Remembers
Visit Vernon Mill Remembers at Vernon Mill 8 to 10 March

This coming weekend – Friday 8th March to Sunday 10th March – is the Open Studio event at my studios – Vernon Mill, Stockport SK1 2HX.

The weekend is a chance to look at some of the history of our mill and to respond artistically to aspects of it. As you go around the third floor studios you can follow our art trail map to visit all the studios where artists have responded to the theme. We have also been collaborating with others in our local community to produce the show and have had funding from Stockport Town Of Culture.

I will be showing the portraits I have painted. I have painted portraits of two very different mill workers – Jasper Caulder and Can Istanbul. Jasper worked in the mill as his first job when he came to the UK from Jamaica in 1957. Can is from Turkey and has run his business Kilim Company from the mill for many years, selling Turkish rugs – Kilims – and other products where Kilims have been used. Come along over the weekend and you can see my portraits and studies of the two men!

I am also showing some work of my students which has been produced in response to the theme ‘Vernon Mill Remembers’ as they have produced some interesting oil paintings and mixed media work.

I have moved studios within the mill. My new studio is in the centre of the third floor. Look out for the Sarah Morley Fine Art signs. Also the other piece of work for this show – the very large canvas covering the iron gate outside my studio. Can you see the ghosts?

On Friday 8th March there is also a concert at the mill by Stockport musicians ‘The Weavers’ who will be joined for some numbers by the choir of St Thomas C of E Primary School. On Saturday 9th March at 7.30pm Droysden Little Theatre are perforning a piece about the mill and it’s people, past or perhaps still present at times. It promises to be a little scary. Suitable for over 16s. On Sunday there is poetry from ‘Jean The Hat.’
